How to Take the SF Buried History Tour
Before you begin, print out this map so that you can access the tour’s augmented reality features.
You can experience this tour from anywhere, but we recommend visiting the tour stops in person. The tour has 12 stops over a travel distance of 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers). You can visit them in any order. Tour stop #1 is on the Plaza next to the Exploratorium at Pier 15.
To get walking or bicycling directions to a tour stop, go to the online map and click on the tour stop’s name or number.
As you move through the city, please stay alert to your surroundings, and always keep your own safety in mind. Use particular caution when traveling after dark, across busy streets, or in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
How to Use the Augmented Reality (AR) Features
Three of the tour stops have augmented reality (AR) features—interactive 3-D renderings of landscapes and artifacts, such as the excavation of the Gold Rush ship Niantic.
To explore the AR features:
- Download and print this map. It has icons needed to activate the AR features.
- Navigate to one of the three tour stop pages that has an AR feature:
- Scroll down to the Augmented Reality (AR) Feature and follow the instructions.
